As far as I know, GMA-7's original plan was to buy a franchise of the hit reality singing search "X Factor", but the producer of the show Simon Cowell has a couple requirements for the production of the show and it so happened that the Kapuso Network couldn't meet those requirements so the negotiation failed and they've decided to just create a reality singing search of their own which is "Protege"
