Amercian Idol's Ratings Drops But Still Maintains Lead

American Idol's ratings may have dropped down to 12 percent from last year but it somehow managed to maintain the lead. In fact, American Idol Season 10 gave Fox it's best ratings in sixteen years.

There was a bit of good news/ bad news for "American Idol" on Friday morning (January 21). When the ratings came in for Thursday night's second audition episode of season 10, the numbers were once again down from last year, but on its new night, the show also notched the highest Thursday night ratings in more than 15 years for the Fox network

The Hollywood Reporter reported that the show averaged 22.9 million viewers and a 7.8 rating in the crucial 18-49 demographic, easily winning the night and more than doubling the numbers put up by the next-highest-rated show, NBC's "The Office" (8.3 million viewers, 4.5 rating).

"American Idol" pulled off a bit of a magic trick Thursday night, handing Fox its best ratings on the night since 1995 without seriously dragging down the other networks.
Fox moved "Idol" to a Wednesday-Thursday schedule this season after following a Tuesday-Wednesday pattern in years past. In its Thursday debut, "Idol" delivered an average of 22.9 million total viewers, according to the Nielsen Co. That was down a relatively modest 13% compared with last year's Wednesday opener -- not bad considering "Idol's" age and the heightened competition on Thursday nights.

It won the night for Fox, drawing 22.9 million viewers. That number was down from Wednesday's 26.2 million, two-hour opener. But the decline was predictable and expected, reports USA TODAY's Gary Levin.

In it's Thursday debut, American Idol delivered an average of 22.9 million total viewers, according to Nielsen Co. Although that was down 13% from last year's Wednesday opener, it's actually not bad considering the singing competition's age and the heightened competition on Thursday nights, reports the Los Angeles Times.

This is good news for American Idol, it may not be as big as it was in the past seasons but it's showing some signs of strength. American Idol is in transition period, Simon and Paula are gone and it's a start of a new era for American Idol. Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler may have pulled some kind of miracle and the televiewers will get used to seeing them on the judges table in the coming days, and who knows, American Idol might go back to it's TV's juggernaut status like it did in the past decade.
